ASK YOURSELF WHY

Now for the context of this piece I am specifically looking at your nutrition and results, however, this could be relevant to a lot more than just that.

If you are struggling to get results it will inevitably come down to your nutrition. If you’re not losing body fat, your nutrition is likely to be off. If you’re trying to grow more muscle and struggling, you’re possibly not eating enough.

We are surrounded by food, it’s everywhere we look & listen so it’s no wonder it can get confusing at times. Should I eat like that person? Should I eat like my friend? The answer to how you should eat, what you should eat or even how much you should eat will always start with “it depends?”.

Here I am talking about someone who is wanting to feel a little better with how they look in the mirror or their favourite outfit. Roughly translated “I want to lose weight” means you want to feel better about how you look, and despite everyone telling you that you shouldn’t focus on that I’m telling you it is OK to want to look better. Take it from me, if you look better it can help you feel better. The implications of having too much body fat definitely outweigh the implications of losing some!

Sound familiar? You have been busy all week, you have killed your training sessions and nailed your nutrition. But, on Friday evening you have just had your dinner but find yourself reaching for the sweet treats that will take you off plan. What I want you to do here is look to “WHY?” you are doing this?

Before you tuck into whatever it is that you are going to demolish ask yourself, “why do I want this & will it take me closer to my goals?”

The answer to the second part of that question is usually “No, it won't take you closer to your goals” but the answer to the first part is a little trickier. We eat food for a whole host of different reasons:

Boredom, Stress, Frustration, Emotional, Anger, Social (which is cool to do), the list goes on.

If you are eating because you’re bored, find something to do! Stress or emotional eating? Look at what is causing that stress or emotional response and address it as much as you can?

As much as food is there for enjoyment it’s main purpose is for fuel. Fuel your day to day life first, fuel your training second, fuel your emotions never.

Next time you think to yourself “I probably shouldn’t be eating this” look at why you are and address it!
